Ford strategies more turbocharged vehicles, including F-150

Turbo-loving Ford is increasing its EcoBoost engine lineup to include three more, it said today. One of the engines will go in Ford's most admired vehicle, the F-150 pickup.

The fuel-saving engines are going to show up as the base or option in mainly of Ford's lineup, both in the U.S. and in Europe. That C-Max hatchback for the European market, for example, in the photo above will get one.

Ford says the engine will be offered in 90% of its U.S. models, 80% worldwide. By 2013, Ford expects to be building 1.5 million EcoBoost engines globally, about 200,000 more than originally expected. About half of the EcoBoosts twisted will be for vehicles being sold in the U.S.

EcoBoost is Ford's nice method of saying the engine is turbocharged. Turbos are controversial as earlier models from a decade ago had problems with hesitation during hard acceleration -- called "turbo lag." Ford says it is has eliminated the problem and the turbocharged engines feel the same as those lacking turbos.

We are alert on sustainable technology solutions that can be used not for hundreds or thousands of cars, but for millions of cars, because that's how Ford will really make a difference, said Barb Samardzich, Ford's vice president of powertrain engineering.
