DETROIT introduced a $1.4 million 1001 horsepower monster at this sagging economy. Leather from cattle raised in special high-altitude pastures.The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport roadster is less a car than a visit to an alternative reality. The Grand Sport roadster is new for 2009, part of Bugatti’s 100th anniversary.
The 16-cylinder engine produces more power than a small tugboat. It could push a barge of rice up the Mississippi, except the Veyron would exhaust its 26.4-gallon gas tank in about seven minutes at wide-open throttle.
It’s a frighteningly fast car, but as easy to drive as a Ford Taurus. It justifies its existence both by testing new technologies for the Volkswagen Group and by generating a waiting list of orders complete with deposit that have the factory fully booked for more than a year.
Bugatti has delivered 200 Veyron 16.4 coupes since production began in late 2005. The total model run is capped at 300. Bugatti has orders with deposits taken for an additional 50. It takes about a month to build a Veyron in Bugatti’s factory in Molsheim, France.
The engine is still the rather impressive 8.0lt quad-turbo W16 unit and it’s still producing only 1001hp (come on Bugatti – do something more – just kidding – just kidding!) which is of course more than enough to give the car the title of the most powerful production car ever. How much torque I hear you asking? Well that has now been revealed and it is an amazing 922lb.ft available all the way from 2200 to 5500 rpm (wow – that reminds me of the 1.8T Volkswagen/Audi engine and its impressive torque curve – I guess this is a bit more powerful though!).
The gearbox has “something” to say as well: It’s a 7-speed sequential with… two clutches (haven’t heard of this before…). One clutch is used for 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th gear while the other one is used for 2nd, 4th and 6th. As one clutch is always engaged and the other is always open, the system opens the driving clutch as it closes the “new” one that will engage the next gear. The result? You don’t feel a loss of power at all despite the gear change taking 0.2 seconds to complete!
The performance figures sound – at least – scary! Accelerating to 186mph will only take 14 seconds! Top speed will reach (under certain conditions like the use of the right tyres) 252 mph (yes – that’s more than 400km/h!).Bugatti will build 150 Grand Sports, which are nearly identical to the coupe except for a removable targa top.
The Grand Sports are reserved for Bugatti customers who are coming back for seconds.One potential buyer stopped by Bugatti of Troy, Mich., recently to take a Grand Sport out for a spin.That anonymous high-roller was treated to four turbochargers that whistle like a taxiing Boeing 747 and creamy leather on virtually every surface. Bugatti buys leather from cattle raised in Austrian Alpine meadows, above the elevation where mosquitoes, wasps and other biting insects live.
Bug bites on cows, you see, can lead to blemishes on leather. Bugatti doesn’t do blemishes.It does help VW move technologies from the race track and the luxury rack to the company’s mainstream brands. The Veyron’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is both seamlessly smooth and closely related to the racing gearboxes VW’s Audi brand used to dominate the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The stability control system may be the only one in the world that has been tested to make sure it keeps the car safe and stable at 186 miles an hour.
The Veyron accelerates to 62 mph in 2.5 seconds, and its massive carbon-ceramic brakes bring it back to a standstill in just 2.3.The top speed is 253 mph. Small problems can become fatal failures very quickly at that speed, so Bugatti’s sales contract warns owners their car will arrive with up to 310 miles on the odometer.
Every car gets a test-drive of at least 220 miles to check every system. Bugatti wraps the cars in plastic to protect the paint and replaces the wheels and tires before the car goes to its owner.So really, it’s $1.4 million for a lightly used car. With no cup holders, incidentally.

First Impression: Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Bugatti has been making high-performing, luxurious cars since 1909. In 1998, Volkswagen bought the rights to make cars under the Bugatti name. In 2005, Bugatti released the 253 mph Veyron, which was the fastest production car at that time. In 2007, an American independent automotive company, Shelby Supercars (SSC), released the 257 mph Ultimate Aero TT. Volkswagen and Bugatti were not pleased. In 2010, in order recapture the fastest production car title, Volkswagen and Bugatti released the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. On June 26, 2010, on the Volkswagen test track while taping a review for Top Gear, the Veyron Super Sport reached a speed of 267.856 mph, dethroning the SSC Ultimate Aero TT as the fastest production car.

I first saw the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport at the 2011 Houston Classy Chassis: Concours d'Elegance. There was a consistent large crowd around the car. There was a 1930 Duesenberg Model J, 1931 Bugatti Type 40A Roadster, and a 1922 Hispano Suiza H6B Labourdette Skiff near the Veyron Super Sport, yet it was the Veyron Super Sport that got more attention than these three legendary cars. My first thought on the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is this is one exciting car. When I see pictures of the Veyron Super Sport, it has a two-tone paint job with black on top, orange on the bottom, and orange wheels. The Veyron Super Sport on displayed had a beautiful dark blue paint job. No matter where Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is, it will always stand in a crowd. There is nothing on the road like a Bugatti.

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is powered by a quad-turbocharged W16 engine, paired with a seven-speed DSG semi-automatic transmission, that produces 1184 hp and 1,100 lb-ft of torque. It takes this car just 2.2 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph. The top speed is electronically limited to 258 mph to protect the tires. The record run was done using a different set of tires and the limiter was turned off. Only thirty Veyron Super Sports will be produced, and each one will cost $2.4 million. The Veyron Super Sport is 447 lbs lighter than the standard Veyron. The standard Veyron cost $1.44 million when it was first released. The Veyron Super Sport is nearly $1 million dollars more expensive than the standard Veyron.

Top Gear's James May drove the Bugatti Veyron on the Volkswagen test track during Series 15, Episode 5. He reached a speed over 258 mph. His speed was latter beaten by the Bugatti test driver, Pierre Henri Raphanel. The Stig drove the Bugatti around the Top Gear test track in 1:16.8. It was the fastest car around the test track until the V8 Ariel Atom went around the test track in 1:15.1. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport is playable in Test Drive Unlimited 2 ($1.00 DLC) and in Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit (part of the $7.00 Super Sport Pack DLC).

Final Thought: This is one very quick, extremely fast, bank-breaking car. There is nothing like it on the roads. Only thirty will be made, so those who are fortunate to get a Veyron Super Sport will be part of a highly exclusive club. Cars like the Bugatti Veyron, the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, and the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport push the limits of what a car can do. I wonder what SSC's responds to the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

After having been launched to the world's media and customers at the end of 2005, production of 1001 hp Bugatti Veyron has taken up « full throttle » at the company's factory, the « Atelier », in Molsheim, near Strasbourg, in France. It is there where the car is assembled by a group of 20 highly specialised technicians. In teams of five they follow the car from the beginning until the end of built. They are fully in charge from the moment the engine is rolled into the assembly hall on a trolley until the finished car rolls out of the « Atelier » under its own steam and on its proper wheels.

An international car
The Bugatti Veyron is an impressive platform of top end automotive technology and - loyal to Bugatti's heritage « nothing is too expensive, nothing is too beautiful » - only the best parts and materials in the trade are used in the production process. And the Bugatti Veyron is a truly international car. One of the key- and most sophisticated parts, the 7 speed-sequential-DSG - double-clutch-gearbox, is made by motor sport specialists Ricardo in the UK, the unique 16 cylinder-8.0-litre-engine comes from the Volkswagen engine plant in Salzgitter in Germany.

The tyres - the first production tyres in the industry homologated for speeds above 400 km/h - are a joint development with Michelin. The carbon fibre monocoque is built by ATR in Italy, the front- and rear- structure in forged aluminium by Heggemann in Germany and the bespoke carbon-ceramic brakes by AP Racing in Great Britain. The paintwork is German, the leather Austrian, the windscreen is manufactured in Finland, and so it goes on.

Only 300 units of the Bugatti Veyron will ever be built. Production started at rate of 50 cars per annum, approximately one a week. Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., however, is striving to achieve a higher number and plans to get closer to an annual output of a hundred in order to reduce the waiting period for customers.

It does not come as a surprise that over 30% of the Bugatti Veyron orders are tagged for the United States, traditionally by far the most important market for luxury cars. The USA are followed by Germany. 19% of total orders have been placed by German customers to date. The United Kingdom, classically a country with a very strong link to the legendary Bugatti brand, is third with 16% and the Middle East comes fourth with around 15%.

1998 through 1999: four design studies in 15 months' time In April 1998, the Volkswagen Group took over the Bugatti trademark, presenting the brand to the public for the first time at the International Motor Show in Paris with a study for a twodoor coupe it had commissioned Italdesign to create: the Bugatti EB 118. A few months later, in March 1999, at the Geneva Motor Show, a design of the EB 218, itself also created at Italdesign, caused a sensation with a four-door saloon using the same 18-cylinder, 6.3 litre engine with 555 hp.

This was followed, the same year, at the IAA in Frankfurt, by the centre-engine design, the Bugatti EB 18/3 Chiron; once again Giugiaro was responsible for the design. And shortly thereafter, in Tokyo, the Bugatti EB 18/4 Veyron celebrated its world premiere, a model designed at the 'Volkswagen Centre of Excellence Design' under the directorship of Hartmut Warkuss.

No more than nearly a year later, in autumn 2000 in Paris, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was shown for the first time. The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 with the ultimate in performance features, the 1001 hp, 8- litre, 16-cylinder engine and its technological specifications - 1250 Nm at 2,200 rpm, peak speed of more than 400 km/h, four turbochargers and permanent four-wheel drive - features that have remained in place to this day, celebrated its debut at the IAA in Frankfurt in September of 2001.

2003: New team - new objectives
In 2001, the decision was made to go into serial production of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 with a lot not to exceed 300 cars. In December of the following year, 'Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.' was established, a subsidiary of 'Volkswagen France' with headquarters in Molsheim. And nearly a year to the day thereafter, at the end of 2003, Dr Thomas Bscher took overall charge of the Bugatti project as the new President of 'Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.'. Appointed to assist him was D. Wolfgang Schreiber, serving as technical director and simultaneously as head of 'Bugatti Engineering GmbH' in Wolfsburg, where all of the development work for the new Bugatti is co-ordinated and, in part, carried out. His functional mission was to put the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 on the road.

The new team subjected the entire project to a technological and financial feasibility study commissioned, among other things, to develop a realistic timeframe for the launch of production of the new Bugatti. Shortly before the 2004 Geneva Motor Show, the Executive Board at the Group approved plans for the 'new' Veyron project, scheduling production to begin in September 2005. This schedule has been met to this day.

The Bugatti Veyron: An unrivalled synthesis of top performance with the everyday
This is made all the more remarkable by the fact that the Bugatti Veyron 16.4, despite its very limited production, is called upon to meet all of the specifications of the VW Group in their entirety. This means innumerable time-consuming trials and tests throughout the entire world, all devoted to the fulfilment of a single objective: to measure up to the strict, indeed relentless quality and quality-assurance standards the company has laid down. This ensures that this super sports car will be suitable for everyday driving as well, to a degree never before witnessed in any other serial-production vehicle of this type.

In the world of modern, serial-production automobiles, the synthesis which has been brought to fruition in the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is a synthesis between easy and problem-free operation in day-to-day traffic and breathtaking driving in the high-performance area. A reference which would be music to the ears of Ettore Bugatti, whose early successes themselves were rooted in this unique combination.

Extensive construction work in Molsheim
Tandem to the ongoing activities in the product area, extensive construction work has been launched at the location in Molsheim. To begin with, the Château St. Jean - an edifice that Ettore Bugatti never used as a residence but rather only as a form of what, in today's parlance would be termed a customer service centre, was completely renovated.

The two stalls located to the south and the north of the castle, which in Bugatti's day served as stables, were telemetrically surveyed, dismantled and, using as many of the original elements of the structure, such as wall segments and woodwork, as were still usable, reconstructed in a faithful copy of the original structures. In this new 'Bugatti Era', these structures will for the most part have an administrative character; in one of the spaces, clients will also be able to receive their Bugatti Veyron in an historical setting.

The core of the investments made in Molsheim is the 'Atelier' in which production of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is beginning in September 2005. In its architectural form, this modern production facility has been given stylistic features dipping back into the history of the automotive brand. With a southern exposure, the light-filled, glassed main hall is only partly evocative of an automobile-manufacturing operation in the classical sense of the term - it reminds the beholder more of a 'Formula One laboratory'. The setting is dominated by clinical cleanliness and precision workmanship with highly developed component parts. And yet the 'Atelier' can still hold its own against the 'major players'.

A runway for the measurement of relevant functional-performance data and a generously proportioned water-spraying system for testing vehicle water tightness are to be found here, alongside a light chamber under the glaring lamps of which the slightest inconsistency in a car's paintwork mercilessly catches the eye. A small test course has been laid out in the green spaces in front of the building. It can be used to supplement the road-test programme compulsory for all Veyrons and which concludes the vehicle's production process. A logistics centre erected next to the 'Atelier' rounds out the complex of buildings in Molsheim.

Historic location
Thanks to Bugatti, Molsheim has been elevated from anonymity to find its own place on the map - not just of the automotive world. And this is certainly justified, both for the location of Ettore Bugatti's production facilities and his private residence, which is located immediately adjacent. With the purchase of the Château St. Jean and the property surrounding it, comprising some 140,000 m2 and the site of all other modern-day Bugatti activities as well, this has changed somewhat in purely geographic terms. To be precise, the property is situated in Dorlisheim which, while within sight of the former Bugatti factory, is nevertheless located on the other side of the Bruche River. This has been the source of inspiration for a 'postal sleight of hand' on the part of the new management at Bugatti.

To be able to carry the historic value of the location in Molsheim into the Bugatti future while at the same time satisfying the administrative regulations of the Land, a compromise was negotiated with local authorities. A Solomonic solution was arrived at with the latter - who took a very favourable view of the entire Bugatti project right from the beginning, providing their active support throughout its development. The correct and complete address of Bugatti 'Cru 2005' is: Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., 1, Château St. Jean, Dorlisheim, F-67 120 Molsheim.

Bugatti is on the threshold of a new era. Its location is Molsheim. The company is international. Ettore Bugatti was born in 1881 in Italy. He completed his technological instruction in Germany, first with de Dietrich in Niederbronn in Alsace - at the time still a part of Germany - and then at Deutz in Cologne, before he built his first automobile in 1909 in Molsheim. Since 1998, Bugatti has belonged to the Volkswagen Group as a French company with a French headquarters.

The modern-day Bugatti team - every bit as international as the company itself - views the legacy of Ettore Bugatti as both a challenge and an obligation. Thus, Dr Bscher concluded his welcoming remarks with these words: 'We have brought the Bugatti Veyron from a visionary sketch into the reality of the contemporary automotive world. In doing so, we have laid the cornerstone for leading one of the most renowned and reputable makes of automobile from the virtuality of the past into the hard competition of the future. The Bugatti brand will rise to this competition. The Bugatti Veyron is the best sports car in the world, a car the likes of which the world has, in this form, never seen before. Its technical data are second to none. The Bugatti Veyron closes the gap between myth and vision. We believe that we have interpreted Ettore Bugatti's ideas in the 21st century in much the same manner as he himself may have done. Whether we have succeeded in this remains to be shown. But one thing is certain. The Bugatti Veyron is just the beginning. This automotive brand is alive - and will live on.'

As the climax of its centenary celebration ceremonies, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. presented customers and opinion-makers with the Bugatti Galibier Concept, intended to be the most exclusive, elegant, and powerful four door automobile in the world last weekend in Molsheim. At the historic site where Ettore Bugatti once laid the cornerstone of his company, Bugatti's current president, Dr. Ing. Franz-Josef Paefgen emphasised that the Bugatti Galibier 16C is one of several concept studies with which the company is considering for the future of the Bugatti marque.

Technique: those are the brand values to which Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean oriented themselves in order to develop even more powerful engines and even more noble body designs for each new model, which were without equal in quality, handling, speed and elegance. In the process, they experimented again and again without compromise with new materials; thus was Bugatti one of the first manufacturers to use aluminium parts for bodies, engine blocks and wheels.

Technique are also the brand values to which the design and engineering team of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. oriented themselves in the development of the Bugatti Galibier. With this new four-door concept car, Bugatti assumes anew a leading role in the use of new material combinations. Thus the body is constructed of handmade carbon fibre parts coloured dark blue so that, when illuminated, the woven structure shimmers through strikingly. Carbon fibre not only possesses unusually great rigidity but is also especially light. The wings and doors are out of polished aluminium.

The Bugatti Galibier's design masters the challenge of uniting sportiness with the comfort and elegance of a modern four-door saloon. The basic architecture picks up on the torpedo-like character of the Type 35, which was already revived in the Bugatti Veyron, and reinterprets it. With the typical Bugatti radiator grille, big round LED headlights and the clamshell running the length of the vehicle which became synonymous with the brand identity under Jean Bugatti in the Type 57, this car transports the Bugatti genes into the modern world.

Beneath the bonnet, which folds back from both sides, there resides a 16-cylinder, 8-litre engine with twostage supercharging. What makes this engine special is that it was developed as a flex-fuel engine and can optional be run on ethanol. Four-wheel drive, specially developed ceramic brakes and a new suspension design enable the agile, always-sure handling of a saloon of this size.

The interior reflects the elemental design of the exterior. The dash panel has been reduced to the essential; two centrally located main instruments keep even the rear passengers constantly informed of the actual speed and previous performance. Parmigiani, the Swiss maker of fine watches, created the removable Reverso Tourbillon clock for the Bugatti Galibier, which may be worn on the wrist thanks to a cleverly designed leather strap.

First Impression: Bugatti Veyron

I have seen many rare cars over the years and would like to share some of those cars with you.  I am starting a series called "First Impressions", where I give information about the cars I have seen and my thoughts on the cars.
Since graduating from college and moving back home to Houston, I have attended many local car events.  The first event was June 7, 2010, Classy Chassis: Concours d'Elegance, being held on the floor of Relient Stadium.  People from around the country bring and show off their unique cars.  A dealership from Dallas decided to bring a 2010 Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 Grand Sport.
A standard Veyron is a 4400lbs super car with a 8.0L W16 engine that produces 1001hp and has a top speed of 253 mph and it only takes 2.5 seconds for it to go from 0 to 60 mph.  The grand sport variant features a targa top.  With the top off, the Veyron can only go 229 mph. The price for this car is about $2 million.  When it came out in 2005, it was the fastest road-legal production car, dethroning the Koenigsegg CCR.  It held the title until the American Made SSC Ultimate Aero.
When I first saw the Veyron, I could not look away.  In a placed filled with Ferraris, Lambos, and Shelby Cobras, I could only focus on the Veyron.  I keep thinking that this is the only time I will ever see one.  This is the new standards for all modern cars.  I don't care if I would never drive one, I was content with just being in the presence of the Veyron.
The Bugatti Veyron was featured in Transformers: Cybertron.  It was the vehicle mode for Crosswise.  It has been featured in the Need for Speed series.  There are several videos on Youtube showing a guy drive a Veyron into a lake just north of Galveston. 
It has also made a few appearances on Top Gear.  Top Gear named the Veryon its car of the decade (2000-2009).  James May drove the car around the Volkswagen test track, reaching its top speed.  Jeremy Clarkson raced a plane from Italy to London and won.  Richard Hammond raced a McLaren F1 (driven by the Stig) and won.
Final Thought:  A lot of car for a lot of money.  There will never be a car like it.

Wanted: Responsible Person to Drive World’s Top Supercars

How’s this for a dream job? Britain’s Repairacar is seeking a very special someone who can drive supercars from a customer’s address to one of their repair shops and back. It’s all very glamorous – the opportunity to drive supercars as diverse as Aston Martins, Ferraris and even the occasional Zonda or Bugatti Veyron – though it does include some taking of public transport.

A company spokesperson explains:“[The successful applicant] will also be expected to make their own way back to base from any corner of the UK and Europe – using public transport.”

So what they’re offering are a couple of hours on a bus or train in return for the chance to drive a selection of the world’s greatest supercars? Who could say no? Well, Repairacar, for one. You see, they’re not just looking for any Tom, Dick or Harry:

VW Group Reportedly Approves 1,000HP Bugatti 16C Galibier Sedan for Production


Bugatti has received approval from parent company Volkswagen to build the 16C Galibier sedan, according to a Bloomberg report quoting two people familiar with the matter. Show as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the Galibier packs 1,000 horsepower under its hood and could cost around €1 million ($1.4 million), according to the inside sources.

Forbes' Top 10 List of the Most Expensive Cars in the World


For most people a $50,000 car is well out of reach, while others happily spend double or triple of that amount on a ride. However, even those enthusiasts might not be so keen to whip out their checkbooks when confronted with the price tag of these vehicles featured in a special list compiled by Forbes.

These are the most expensive cars in the world, usually bought by the kind of people who don’t even break a sweat amidst the worst economic crisis. Forbes' list in not without its flaws as the publication added two vehicles (the Enzo's successor and the upcoming Pagani Zonda C9) that have yet to be revealed, let alone be priced. Video Preview of Porsche Boxster-Based Bugatti Veyron Replica in the Making


While we certainly won't go as far as calling the Boxster the Fiero of the 2010s, thanks to its mid-engine layout and a significant drop in pricing of the first generation models, Porsche's roadster model is becoming increasingly popular as a donor car among replica makers. Recently we showed you a Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster clone based on a Boxster S, but now there's a new project car making the internet rounds.

This time the Porsche model will lend its hardware to a Bugatti Veyron replica that is being built as we speak by a man who goes by the name Orlando M. The replica maker explains that the car will not be put up for sale upon completion but will be used as a personal vehicle. The project is still under development but you can take a sneak peek of the process in the videos after the jump.
