Chevrolet to plonk in a diesel engine in the Spark
Chevrolet has officially announced that the company will launch a diesel variant of the Beat very soon. Powered by a three cylinder version of the fabled 1.3 Fiat multijet engine, the new powerplant will be ultra-efficient. However, that’s not the end of the story when it comes to diesel powered Chevy small cars in India. The company wants to get super aggressive in the small car segment and will power its entry level Spark with the new diesel engine as well. The move will make the Spark the most economical and fuel efficient cars in the country to own and run. The Spark is an accomplished car, and a diesel engine will make it a fabulous option for value seekers in the small car segment. Apart from putting in a diesel engine in the car, the American company also plans to put an 800cc petrol mill into the bonnet and position the car bang opposite the hot selling Alto. Even if Chevrolet manages to steal a small percentage of the Alto’s sales, it would be doing incredible volumes.
Company’s marketing head, P Balendran, told Wheelsunplugged in an interview that the company plans to launch six new models, and 14 fuel variants in the next two years. Of these, three will be from the Chinese SAIC stable. The company plans a new compact car, one sedan and a new version of the Captiva. A pickup van, a small SUV and an MUV are also on the cards.

Maruti Suzuki SX4 diesel spy pictures
The one reason why the SX4 is not as successful in India as it should have been is that it doesn’t come with a diesel option. It is no secret that the company is plonking in the 1.3 litre Fiat sourced diesel engine into the car with 90PS and 200Nm of torque. However, the pictures of the diesel car hitting the interweb is definitely news. ACI has managed to scoop the pictures of the new car parked at one of the dealerships. This means that the car is on schedule for its mid-February launch. Good thing is that unlike the Swift and Dzire, Maruti Suzuki is not going to bereave the SX4 diesel from the top of the line ZDi variant. Its notable that the Swift and Dzire are not available in ZDi trim, and can be bought only in the VDi trim-level.
Maruti Suzuki is saying that their car will better the Manza and Linea which run the same engine in terms of both performance and fuel efficiency. The car will be cheaper than the Vento by a substantial margin. Expect a price increase of around Rs 70,000 over the petrol version.

Seat Adds Exeo 143HP 2.0-liter Diesel Engine with Multitronic CVT Transmission to the Mix
Although it comes with 7 pre-configured gears, the CVT transmission can virtually provide infinite gear ratios, better exploiting the engine’s resources, while reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
In terms of performance, the diesel-powered sedan accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.3 seconds and can reach a top speed of 208 km/h (129 mph). The station wagon is marginally slower (0-100 kmh/0-62 mph in 9.6 seconds, top speed of 201 km/h or 125 mph), but both versions are equally frugal, requiring 5.8 lt/100 km (40.5 US mpg) in the combined cycle.
The Seat Exeo and Exeo ST equipped with the 143-horsepower diesel and Multitronic gearbox come as standard with seven airbags, dual-zone air conditioning, front and rear power windows, foglights, chrome roof rails (on the Exeo ST), remote-controlled central locking, cruise control, Bluetooth, auto-dimming rear view mirror, CD MP3 radio with 8 speakers and 17-inch alloys.
Besides the transmission addition, Seat says that all new Exeos benefit from a repositioned the rear seat configuration, which increases legroom by an impressive 4.4 cm (1.73 inches) without affecting the comfort or cargo space.

Brabus Presents the World’s First Euro 6 Compliant Performance Kit for Diesel Models
Designed to work like a plug-and-play device, the module increases the 3.0-liter V6 diesel’s output depending on the selected shift mode of the 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission. In “Eco” mode, peak torque increases, but the engine output remains unchanged (258HP), while in “Manual” or “Sport” mode maximum power is also boosted.
The modified S350 sprints from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in a very respectable 6.5 seconds and can reach an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The Brabus ECO PowerXtra D6S unit can be also fitted to all Mercedes E350 CDI BlueEfficiency variants as well as the CLS 350 CDI BlueEfficiency model, delivering identical output.
All models come with a three-year or 100,000 km (62,000 miles) warranty and can be specified with a custom Brabus stainless-steel exhaust with 4 tailpipes, delivering a more distinctive exhaust note and further optimizing power yield.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback: Production Model to Debut at Geneva Motor Show
“Hatchbacks play a critical role in many markets. The total compact segment in Europe represents over a quarter of the total market, with hatchbacks representing around 65% of that volume”, said Wayne Brannon, president and managing director of Chevrolet Europe. “The new Cruze hatchback cements that Chevrolet's claim for a place among the mainstream brands in Europe, and it's a vehicle that will bring new levels of value against some of the more established competition”.
With its sweeping lines, short overhangs and, in our opinion, better looking rear quarter compared to the sedan, the hatchback is said to be “particularly well suited to European driver tastes”. To achieve this, it uses the same body-frame integral system (BFI) chassis complemented by some fine-tuning and the four-door model’s engine range, plus new additions, such as the Orlando MPV’s 163HP 2.0-liter diesel powerplant.
From a practical standpoint, the new model loses 50 liters of cargo space for a total of 400 liters, but the large liftgate and 60/40 split rear seating should compensate in terms of practicality.
The Cruze hatchback is due in Europe in mid 2011 and prices will be announced closer to the launch date. It will also be available as a Holden in Australia.
Toyota UK Introduces Land Cruiser and Land Cruiser V8 60th Anniversary Models
Additionally, the Land Cruiser’s 3.0-liter D-4D diesel engine has been revised for the 2011MY and is now capable of 188bhp (+11bhp) and 420 Nm (310 lb-ft) of torque (+10 Nm/+7 lb-ft), while achieving the same fuel economy. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is also available, making the oil-burning powerplant Euro 5 compliant.
The base price for the Land Cruiser 60th Anniversary is £49,950, while the Land Cruiser V8 60th Anniversary carries a price sticker of £61,950. The anniversary models are available now.
Last but not least, Toyota is once again selling a three-door version of the Land Cruiser, available in a single trim level (LC3) and with a manual transmission only. The standard equipment list includes 17-inch alloy wheels, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Active Traction Control (A-TRC), climate control, smart entry and start system, Bluetooth, six-speaker audio system and front fog lamps. The “on the road” price is £30,395.
The Land Cruiser’s history began in 1951, when Toyota launched the truck-derived BJ, initially for military service. It was the first vehicle to reach the sixth hill station on Mount Fuji, located at an altitude of 2,500 meters. Impressed by its off-road capabilities, the Japanese police added it to its fleet, practically jumpstarting the model’s long-term success.
The Land Cruiser nameplate was first used in 1954, as a generic designation for the new Type 25 BJ, while the forerunner of the Land Cruiser V8 was the 1966 Land Cruiser Station Wagon, introduced in the U.S. as more refined version of the standard model.
Chevrolet Beat diesel coming in a few weeks’ time

During the launch of the new ‘Smartech’ engine for the Beat, the GM India management made quite a few announcements. One of the important announcements made during the event was about the diesel Beat. We have been expecting the car for quite some time now, and think of it as a very important launch. Reason being, the Beat, even today is the cheapest premium hatch available, undercutting its rivals significantly on the price front. We honestly believe that the
Beat diesel may just turn out to be the game changer for Chevrolet.
We have a feeling that the blokes at GM India are going to price it aggressively, and if that happens, the Beat will present itself as a diesel option for the price at which some of its petrol rivals sell. And no one would mind an efficient diesel in today’s times of soaring fuel prices.
Answering a question about his satisfaction with the Beat’s sales during the engine launch, Karl Slym, GM India’s President and MD said “I wish there was a diesel engine in the Beat. We have been developing a diesel engine specifically for India. I am happy with the petrol version’s sales.” He also said very unequivocal that “the diesel engine is just a few weeks away”.
Having heard it from the horse’s mouth, we are sure it’s coming soon now. And we’re already rubbing our hands in anticipation as the Beat with a fuel efficient diesel would really make for a terrific VFM buy.
